StuyCS Course Catalog

Our courses are designed to provide a well-rounded understanding of Computer Science and programming. Foundations and AP CS A (both versions) will give students an incredibly strong base of understanding using multiple languages, tools, and algorithms. The electives then offer opportunities to dive into more specific areas of study.

• Foundations of Computer Science (Single Semester)
  • Required class for all sophomores. Covers foundations of cs and programming using the Racket and NetLogo programming langauges. Single semester variant is usually paird with Drafting (not a CS department course).
• Foundations of Computer Science (Full Year)
  • The first semester of this course is the same as single semester foundations. The second semester dives deeper into the topics of the dfirst semester using the python programming langauge. Students will also learn about website development using HTML/CSS. The second semester fulfills Stuyvesan'ts 5-tech graduation requirement.
• Advanced Placement Computer Science A
  • This year long class covers the APCS A curriculum with a project-based focus using the Java version of the Processing framework. Students must have completed Foundations of CS (either version), with at least an 85 to take this course. (This class is based on our previous NeXtCS Java with Creativity and Rigor course). APCS A fulfills the Applied Science graduation requirement.
• Honors Advanced Placement Computer Science A
  • This year long class provides a more in-depth treatment of the APCS A curriculum, as well as providing more advanced data structures and algorithms outside the scope of APCS A. This class is modeled after the College Board's old APCS AB curriculum. Students must have completed Foundations of CS (either version), with at least a 95 and receive the endorsement of their CS teacher to take this course. Honors APCS A fulfills the Applied Science graduation requirement.
• Systems Level Programming
  • Systems Level Programming introduces students to C programming and linux system calls. This course focuses on providing low level access to computer resources, such as memory, storage and processesor. This is a single semester course offered only in the Fall. Students must have completed APCS A (either version), with at least an 85 to take this course.
• Computer Graphics
  • In Computer Graphics, we build a gradphics engine, starting with lines and ending with animated 3d rendering including lighting and shading. This course is based in the algorithms of comptuer grpahics, and not taught it any specific language. Resources are provided in Java, Python, and C, but students may opt to use another langauge with teacher approval. This is a single semester course offered in both the Fall and Spring. Students must have passed APCS A (either version) to take this course.
• Software Development
  • Software Development is a year long course focused on building large programs in teams. The teach stack covered is full-stack web development using python/sqlite/javascript/html/css. Just as important as the tech tools is the tools of collaboration and workign in teams with well defined roles. Students will also learn how to depoly their projects on linux servers. This is a full year course offered in both the Fall and Spring. Students must have passed APCS A (either version) to take this course.
• Cybersecurity
  • Designed to bridge the gap between Computer Science theory and security practice, this course focuses on offensive penetration testing and the mindset required to expose vulnerabilities. This class will involve a mix of readings, programming (in various lanagues), and linux command line work. This is a single semester course offered only in the Spring. Students must have completed APCS A (either version), with at least an 85 to take this course.
• CS Ethics
  • This course is aimed at the student who has learned enough CS to be dangerous. We aim to equip any thinker capable of building powerful tools with an awareness of their ethical dimensions. This course requires extensive reading, writing, coding, discussion, introspection and metaphysical consideration. This is a single semester course offered in both the Fall and Spring. Students must have passed APCS A (either version) to take this course.
